Santosh George to become first Indian space tourist
George Jacob
Santosh George
KOTTAYAM: Unveiling the secrets of the unknown was his passion and during the past six years had taken his countrymen though lands unknown to them through his blockbuster TV show `Sancharam.' Now he is all set to take them to the final frontier, the Space: Santosh George Kulangara, the well-known producer and anchor of the popular Malayalam visual travelogue `Sancharam', will be the first Indian space tourist. Though he had reserved a seat for the space adventure long back, the confirmation came on Wednesday when media friends from New Delhi called him to congratulate.
He has been short-listed along with 37 others by the Virgin Galactic, the space tourism enterprise under the stewardship of Richard Bronson, who controls the Virgin brand for a mid-2008 journey. Among the space travellers who have been short-listed for the space journey are noted scientist Stephen Hawking and two U.S.-based persons of Indian origin. ``As per the schedule now, I, along with five of my co-passengers will be aboard Spaceship Two, the vehicle that will take us for the sub-orbital space tourism adventure, by the middle of 2008,'' said Mr. Kulangara.
He is eagerly waiting for the May 10 rendezvous in Paris where the prospective astronauts will meet with the Virgin Galactic authorities for an interaction.
According to him, the training programme is expected to be a short, three-day pre-flight preparation, bonding and training onsite at the spaceport at Mojave desert in California, U.S. It will basically consist of G-force training and prepare one to fully savour every moment of the once-in-a-lifetime experience. ``My intention is not to flout big money or to have an ego trip. I would like to take the people from our society for the space trip,'' said Mr. Kulangara and added that he was already in consultation with the Virgin Galactic authorities for a TV programme on the space journey, right from the interaction in Paris to the training programme to the actual travel into the sub-orbital space and back.
He will have to pay around $ 200,000 for the trip, which will earn him a place among the pioneer category, which means he will be among the first 1,000 space tourists.
For Mr. Kulangara, it all started with a $ 100 trip to Nepal in 1997, which he turned into a visual travelogue. His ability in producing visually attractive and informative travelogues at shoestring budget took him to lands far and wide.
He is preparing to visit north America and will fly to New York on March 23.

"Suresh C kumar" says this on his blog
Santosh George Kulangara will become the first Indian tourist in space and the voyage is expected to cost several crore rupees.
The 35-year old traveler from Kerala state owns a small publishing company near the city of Kottayam.
Global space tour operator Virgin Galactic confirmed his reservation for the two-hour space flight for a price of Rs nine lakhs.
"I am really excited not only because I'll be the first space tourist but the first journalist to go to space," Kulangara said.
"I can show my people in India what Earth looks like, experience of travel, preparation and re-entry to Earth".
Simple application
One of his close friends Felix says the process began with a web application to the space tour operator.
Kulangara will travel to Paris where a meeting of the voyagers is slated for May 10.
He is a little worried about his weight and wants to shed at least 10 kilos before the take-off.
"They have informed me that I need not worry about training I have to maintain my health I have to reduce my weight.
"I am doing some kind of exercise - badminton - so I think I can reduce little bit of my weight and can be in good condition," he said.
Kulangara has visited 50 countries and he is doing a popular television programme called Sancharam.
Two US-based Indian Americans have also signed up for the flight

Meeting the President of India
President A P J Abdul Kalam congratulated me for securing a humongous chance to become the first Indian space tourist.
The President invited me following the acquring of a seat on the space flight by Virgin Galactic.
I was extremely happy about the meeting with the President who briefed me on the various aspects of the project and the space travel.
My name hogged the headlines even as I signed up with Richard-Branson’s Virgin Galactic company, with a confirmed seat aboard the VSS Enterprise spacecraft.
As for the meeting with the President, I had always been looking forward to having such an opportunity. I had always wanted to meet India’s missile man. I spent half-an-hour with the President at Rashtrapathi Bhavan on Thursday (03rd May 2007). I presented a copy of my book ‘Natashayude Varnaballoonukal’ (Natasha’s colourful balloons) to Mr. Kalam. The book is a travelogue on my journeys to Russia and Europe.
The President had advised me to film the experiences in outer space and show them to the children. The President also expressed his hope that India would conduct space tour programmes in future.
I will have to pay an amount of Rs one crore for the flight on the space ship which will last for two hours.
The travellers on board will experience zero gravity and re-entry into earth’s atmosphere.
I was seen off by the President with a suggestion to meet the Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman G.
Madhawan Nair before my space tour with five other fellow travelers that included two- U S – based Indian Americans and two Navigators.
I believe that travelling to space is the ultimate ambition of any travel freak as it is the last destination known to man.

Oru adipoli article that I came across about Santosh and his space trip.
This is an extract of the article read the complete article at http://bobsbanter.com/serious-articles/the-coconut-seller/ - http://bobsbanter.com/serious-articles/the-coconut-seller/
The Coconut Seller...!
“So the first Indian Space Tourist is going to be a Malayalee!” I chuckle to myself as I read the newspaper report, which mentions that Santosh George Kulangara from a nondescript Kerela village will have the rare honour of being the first Indian tourist in space! I remember a joke that used to be oft repeated in college, “What shocked Hillary and Tenzing when they climbed Mount Everest?”
“To see a Malayalee already there, running a tea shop!”

India's first space tourist says he has no regrets about paying $200,000 for a two-hour sub-orbital flight aboard the "world's first spaceliner", and is promising to film the out-of-this-world experience for prosperity - if he returns to Earth safely.
Santosh George Kulangara, 37, a globetrotting diamond entrepreneur and travel show presenter, booked his ticket for Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo, which is set to launch its maiden flight early next year, during a visit to London in 2007.
He showed off his ticket to excited school children in the Nehru Planetarium in Mumbai on September 27, sharing his experiences in astronaut instruction, which have so far has included zero-gravity training at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
