Karukkunna Mailanchi  by Kanimozhi Karunanidhi (DC Books)

DC Books released 'Karukkunna Mailanchi" Malayalam transilation of the book ‘Karukum Marudani’ by Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, daughter of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi

The book release was at the at the DC International Book Fair.

Kanimozhi Karunanidhi has so far published two separate collections of poetry and essays.

She has also penned the lyrics for an album entitled ‘Silapathigaram’ with Bombay Jayasree.

While she will continue to pen poetry, fearlessly expressing her disgust with violence of all sorts, she is well aware of her responsibilities as an emissary of DMK. There are great expectations that she could emerge as one of the strong women leaders of South East Asia

Essays on social issues  by B.R.P.BHASKAR

KARUKKUNNA MAILANCHI: Kanimozhi in Tamil, P. K. Sreenivasan — Tr. in Malayalam; DC Books, DC Kizhakemuri Edam, Good Shepherd Street, Kottayam-686001. Rs. 38.

WHEN A collection of essays of the Member of Rajya Sabha, Kanimozhi, who is the daughter of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M. Karunanidhi, appears in translation it is easy to attach more importance to who she is than to what she has to say. That will be doing injustice to the writer as well as to the work.

In the 17 pieces in this volume, Kanimozhi addresses a variety of problems confronting Indian society. She has definite views on them, which she expresses with refreshing simplicity.

Issues of social justice are her major concern. Gender justice is a recurring theme. She deplores the Gujarat riots and rises in defence of poet H.G. Rasool, who has come under attack from a section of the Muslim community for questioning its patriarchal traditions. She exposes latent caste consciousness in urban communities and draws attention to the growing influence of sectarian organisations on young people.

Kanimozhi looks at issues in a wide social context. A discussion on the poor artistic quality of Tamil films leads her to observe that there is a general willingness to settle for the second best not only in cinema but also in literature, politics and even food.

Kanimozhi makes a point

Last Updated: Monday, 29 September , 2008, 10:37

Kanimozhi's simplicity and straightforwardness came across at the audio launch of Prakash Raj's Abhiyum Naanum, where she received the first copy of the CD from her father, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. Like always, Kanimozhi was dressed in a simple maroon silk sari and gave a very touching speech about the special bond that she shares with her dad.

She pointed out that whenever she goes to Delhi for work, she makes it a point to catch an early flight back to Chennai so that her dad does not worry about her. Kanimozhi also said that she had watched Abhiyum Naanum at a sneak preview and thought that it was realistic in theme and portrayal—something rare in Kollywood, but very common in Bengali and Malayalam films.

She praised Prakash Raj for producing realistic films within the commercial format and said: "But I have a small complaint which I had told Prakash Raj that I will speak here. In Abhiyum Naanum, there is a scene where a husband slaps his wife, which I never expected in a Radha Mohan-Prakash Raj film.

“In films, slapping your wife is an expression of the man's superiority over women. But I wish to remind you that it is an offence under the Domestic Violence Act. I wish this scene was not there in the film or else have a card inserted in the scene to state that domestic violence is against the law".

Later, in his speech, Prakash Raj said that such a card would be inserted in the movie.
