If you are a Kathakali artist or fan... you are most welcome to express yourself and tell us more about this art form at www.simplymalayalees.com

Kerala is known the world over by its own performing art form, the Kathakali.

"Katha" means story and "Kali" stands for dance.

It is a beautiful mix of dance, drama and music that the connoisseurs of art world qualified as 'a total art form of immense sophistication and power'.

It is a mime show, dancing with mudras (formulated hand gestures conveying the text of lyrics) and specialised dancing steps following the song rendered in the background by a singer to the accompaniment of Chenda, Maddalam (country drums), Chenkila and Elathalam (Cymbals).

This is a form of dance formerly confined only to the festival stages in temples.

Kathakali is one of the oldest theatre forms in the world. It originated in the area of southwestern India now known as the state of Kerala.

Kathakali is a group presentation, in which dancers take various roles in performances traditionally based on themes from Hindu mythology, especially the two epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

One of the most interesting aspects of Kathakali is its elaborate make-up code.

Characters are categorized according to their nature.

This determines the colours used in the make-up.

The faces of noble male characters, such as virtuous kings, the divine hero Rama, etc., are predominantly green.

Characters of high birth who have an evil streak, such as the demon king Ravana, are allotted a similar green make-up, slashed with red marks on the cheeks.

Extremely angry or excessively evil characters wear predominantly red make-up and a flowing red beard.

Forest dwellers such as hunters are represented with a predominantly black make-up base.

Kathakali is one of the oldest theatre forms in the world. It originated in the state of Kerala.

The technique of Kathakali includes a highly developed language of gesture, through which the artist can convey whole sentences and stories.

The body movements and footwork are very rigourous.

To attain the high degree of flexibility and muscle control required for this art, a Kathakali dancer undergoes a strenuous course of training, and special periods of body massage.

The orchestra of a Kathakali performance includes two drums known as the chenda, maddalam&ela taalam.

Normally, two singers provide the vocal accompaniment. The style particular to Kathakali is called Sopaanam.

Kerala tourism is coming to the rescue of artistes and craftsmen who find their livelihood threatened for want of patronage. Utsavam (festival), a cultural circuit launched last week, aims at sharing tourism revenue with the traditional artistes, dumped by locals but cherished by tourists.

The programme, inaugurated at Bekal Beach in Kasaragod district by tourism minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, is an attempt to revive vanishing art forms and celebrate unsung artistes. As many as 200 artistes from across Kerala performed at the inaugural function.

“Utsavam is part of cultural tourism programme of Kerala government. The tribal arts, folk arts and ritual art forms are included in the programmes. The cultural circuit, which focuses on the distinctive and unique tradition of Kerala, will cover all the districts of the state,” the minister said.

“Utsavam, a first-of-its-kind annual cultural festival is part of an initiative to revive the art forms of the state and enhance the lives of the artistes. It will be held in all the 14 districts of the state, giving visitors and Keralites a lifetime opportunity to discover the rich cultural heritage of God’s Own Country,” tourism secretary V Venu said.

“Utsavam is a reaffirmation of the fact that tourism for Kerala is not just a tool for enhancing the economy, but also for enriching the cultural wealth of the land and for sustaining the local community,” he added.

Starting with north Kerala’s ‘Mulamchendavadyam’, a unique percussion performance, this cultural fete will feature art forms like Yakshagana, Theyyam, Poorakkali, Thiruvathira, Oppana, Margamkaly, Sopana sangeetham, Charadukuttykaly, Duff muttu, as well as their well-advertised counterparts Kathakali, Mohiniyattam and
Thayambika.

Tourist inflow to Kerala from April to September this year has registered an increase of 40 to 50%, compared to the corresponding period last year. Hoteliers showed 25% increase in the number of tourists seeking accommodation during the same period, indicated a study by the Confederation of Indian Industries on the select sectors in south India
