Thiru Onam is celebrated in the second half of August (the Chingam month of Kollam Era) when the August monsoon rains come to an end and the summer heat gives way to the pleasant warmth of the Kerala autumn. Anthropologists see in Onam a great fertility rite, the ceremony of Thanksgiving for a plentiful harvest. For Keralites Onam is the celebration of the return of Mahabali, their once beloved king.

October will be a festive month for Indian expatriates.
Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala, which fell on September 12, is going to be celebrated this month after the festivities were deferred during Ramadan. The Indian Association has planned to hold joint Onam-Eid celebrations spread over two days from October 9 in Umm Al Quwain. According to Varghese Rajan, President of the association, there will be classical dance performances such as Bharat Natyam and Kuchipidi during the event. Nine nights Ramachandran, President of Priyadarshini Cultural Association, said their own Onam gathering will be held at a hotel in Deira on October 31. Meanwhile, Navratri or the nine nights associated with legendary stories of Hindu goddess Durga, kicked off on October 1 with garba and dandiya ras dances celebrating the victory of good over evil. The India Club has organised a two-day Navratri Dhamaka from October 9. Capping the month-long festivities is the celebration of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, which will take place on October 28 when people are expected to wear new clothes and exchange sweets. Homes are also lit up with traditional earthen lamps and coloured bulbs. |
