Dr. Abdul Kalam had been the one of the most straight forward and down to earth president of our country. Continental airlines has seriously insulted one of the country's favourite presidents of India. I condemn this action by Continental Airlines and will never ever fly with them or recommend them no mattter even if they gave a free boarding. The entire staff who insulted India as a country, by insulting its favourite Ex-President and the top scientist of the country must be grounded and sent home permanently. - Agni Sharman Kalam was frisked by the ground staff of Continental Airlines at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) when he was on the aerobridge while boarding the non-stop flight to Newark, New Jersey.

Continental Airlines apologises to Kalam on frisking issue PTI Wednesday, July 22, 2009 11:52 IST New Delhi: America's Continental Airlines, which had yesterday said there could be no exception to security frisking of its passengers, today apologised to former president APJ Abdul Kalam following a political uproar in the country. "We have tendered a formal apology to Dr Kalam and we sincerely hope he will fly with us again," the airline said in a statement. The statement comes in the backdrop of the uproar in Parliament yesterday over the frisking of the 77-year-old former president before he was to board a Newark-bound flight of the airline on April 21. The government had later registered an FIR against the "concerned staff" of the airline. "Continental Airlines apologises to Dr Kalam for any misunderstanding and/or inconvenience related to the security screening on April 21," the statement said. "Our intention was never to offend Dr Kalam or the sentiments of the people of India. Continental Airlines takes great pride and is honoured to have flown a respectable leader such as Kalam," it said. The incident was condemned in Parliament where civil aviation minister Praful Patel had described the act of frisking Kalam, who is exempted from security checks, as "unpardonable" and assured "corrective action". The Civil Aviation ministry has ordered a probe into the incident involving the ground security staff of the airline which subjected Kalam to the security check. The airline had implied yesterday that Kalam was not exempt from frisking before boarding the aircraft. In today's statement, the airline said, it reiterates its commitment to comply with regulations mandated by local authorities Bureau of Civil Aviation Security(BCAS) as well as US authorities.
"We hope the respective government authorities resolve these difference at the earliest in order to avoid any recurrence of this situation in the future," the statement said. The airline said it is also formally addressing the queries raised in the show cause notice issued by BCAS. |

Kalam yet to receive apology from Continental Airlines NDTV Report on 23rd July 2009 Former President A P J Abdul Kalam is "yet" to receive the apology from America's Continental Airlines for breaching the protocol norms by frisking him at Delhi's international airport. "I have not yet received it," said Kalam when asked about the apology sent by the airline. Asked whether he had felt insulted when he was subjected to the security check, Kalam, who is in Kochi, declined to comment, saying the issue has been discussed in Parliament. When contacted, the airline on Thursday said it had sent the apology letter to Kalam's Delhi office as directed by his official staff and since the former president was travelling, his staff may not have been able to communicate to him about the letter. "We are waiting for him to return to Delhi so that we can apologise to the former president in person," a spokesperson of the airline said. |
