Shashi had his schooling in Calcutta, and I happened to know his parents living here in those days.... we need more people like him in our politics to run the country.... It is unfortunate that, instead of welcoming him with open arms. he is dubbed an outsider in kerala and questioning his participation in the election... My congratulations and best wishes!

It seems Sashi Tharoor on Saturday surprised the media crowd at the meeting named "anghathattu" organised by Kerala Kaumudi at Thiruvananthapuram by speaking in good Malayalam. He rubbished the allegation that he cannot speak in good malayalam. He said he was conversant enough to communicate with the people of Kerala (to understand their problems). He also reminded that as Member of Parliament to raise the problems of the constituency and find solutions, Hindi and English were more useful. I have been counting on the number of languages Sashi Tharoor is fluent in speaking |

"I have great pride in India and believe I can work to make it an even better land for all its citizens." reads Shashi Tharoor's official campaign website. You can read about him and the updates of his campaing etc from http://www.shashitharoor.in/ The website is available in both Malayalam and English. And here is a copy of the Campaign Journal from Shashi Tharoor On Thursday night, 19 March 2009, the Indian National Congress party announced my nomination as its candidate for the Lok Sabha (the Lower House of Parliament) at the forthcoming General Elections. I will contest from the capital of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram (known more familiarly as Trivandrum). It's a huge turn in my life and involves a further "reboot" two years after leaving the UN. The seat is currently held by the Communist Party of India, which has nominated its general secretary. There are also candidates from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), a former Congress Member of Parliament, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as well an independent candidate who has already outspent the rest of us and whose posters have been plastered across the city. Rumours are circulating of a sixth possible entrant into the fray. Psephologists would have about as much accuracy as astrologers in predicting the outcome of such a complex contest. Thiruvananthapuram is only about 40% urban - the rest of the constituency, stretching to the southernmost tip of the country, is rural, and includes a large coastal community dependent largely upon fishing. As I embark on this voyage, every cliché about sailing into uncharted waters and choppy seas applies to me. I will try to provide occasional updates of my progress (or at least my experiences) whenever possible through my campaign website, www.shashitharoor.in [not my "literary" website, www.shashitharoor.com]. |

Thiruvananthapuram: Congress candidate from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala for Lok Sabha elections, Shashi Tharoor, is neither a resident of the constituency nor does he speak Malayalam. The former under-secretary-general of the United Nations, Tharoor, has now traded off the air-conditioned comfort of the UN office in New York for the heat, dust and sweat of Thiruvananthapuram. but with less than two weeks left for polling in the constituency, Tharoor will need more than just luck and his personal charisma to secure a victory.
As reported at CNN IBN. Read full stiry at http://ibnlive.in.com/news/tharoor-campaign-hampered-by-language-barrier/89617-37.html |

Congress candidate and diplomat Shashi Tharoor has own the Thiruvanathapuram Lok Sabha seat. At the other hand Hamdulla of Congress party has won against Pookunji Koya of NCP in Lakshadweep. In the mean time, if we believe the early trends of the Loksabha Polls counting, UPA is set to come into power once again and Manmohan Singh would be the Prime Minister of the country.
Right now UPA is moving ahead on 232 seats leaving NDA far behind at 154 seats. If the counting trends keep continue its pace, its sure UPA would be back to power in the centre. Early results of general elections have gone in favor of Congress making party joyful. Scores of Congress supporters descended at the Congress headquarters in Akbar Road. About one-and-a-half hours into counting, celebrations broke out with chants of “Jai Ho”. Counting of the electronic voting machines began at 8 AM and the first trends are expected to be available within 30 to 45 minutes. |

The global citizen-turned-politician Shashi Tharoor is all set to have his first experience in Parliament. He is one figure who will be eagerly tracked by the whole country and abroad and every Malayalee can be proud of him, not just because he is one among them, but because he will be taking part in all the proceedings clad in a typical white Kerala ‘mundu’ and ‘jubba’. “I think more or less this will be my dress in Parliament,” said Shashi Tharoor, while sharing some lighter moments with the press here on Monday. He also wears a Congress-flag coloured shawl, the reason being the need for some ‘colour’ in his attire. “When I wear just white and more white I feel I need to have some colour on my dress,” he said. |

In India due to foreign publicity Shashi Tharoor has a great image. A critical analysis reveals that Tharoor a reasonable intellect is a great opportunist. He has benefitted quite a bit from his marriage to Christa Giles. Giles needs to be researched in order to critically assess what Tharoor may be up to. His first wife the brilliant and cultured Indian Lady Tilottama can enlighten one more on Tharoor. Tilottama was surely better looking than Giles and also a greater intellect than Shashi.
