THAMPY ANTONY IN HOLLYWOOD

Thamby%20Antony%20goes%20to%20Hollywood!Thampy Antony, the elder brother of actor Babu Antony, is not at all new to films. But of course it is to be said that his is not a familiar face as far as the average Malayalam cine-goer is concerned. The U.S-based Thampy Antony, who had done the lead role, that of Dr.Acharya, in the Rajeev Anchal-directed English film Beyond the Soul, had also produced Rajeev Anchal’s Made in USA, in which he had done a key role. Thampy Antony who won the prestigious Best Actor Award at the Honolulu International Film Festival for portraying the title role of Dr.Acharya in Beyond the Soul, also impressed viewers playing the poet in Palunku and now is on to producing Calcutta News, directed by Blessy.

The news anyhow, concerning Thampy Antony, is that he is doing a good role in a Hollywood film, which is currently in shoot in the U.S. The film, The Root of all Evil, directed by Steven Milburn Anderson and produced by Naveen Chathappuram, has Thampy Antony, whose name features in the credits as Antony Thekkek (his real name), playing the role of Bahadurjit Jateendrapreeth Singh, a Sikh who runs a store in the U.S. The character gets noted when he gets entangled in some funny situations in the movie, which has in lead roles Sean Bean, Chris Hemsworth, Josh Blue, Glen Plummer, Victoria Profeta etc. The film is currently being shot in the U.S and Thampy Antony, who is here in Kerala busy with Calcutta News (his first mainstream Malayalam production venture in which he does the role of a psychiatrist too) says, “Of course I am here now, looking after the production of Calcutta News and all. I have done half of my work in the Hollywood film. And now, when I am required there, I would just go over and do it and come back”. When asked about the role in the Hollywood movie, he quipped, “A very interesting character that I loved doing!” All the best Thampy Antony, for both Calcutta News and for The Root of all Evil!

Antony P Thekkek a.k.a Thampi Antony, a recognized poet in India, became an actor through the hit Malayalam film Arabia in 1995. As his brother Babu Antony was a well-known star in Malayalam films, Thekkek received a great deal of publicity in his first film itself. The critics and the audience unanimously embraced Safar Ali, the character played by Thekkek in the film. The audience called him Thampi Antony, as he was already known by his pen name Thampi through his poetries.

He was overwhelmed with offers from the film industry. However, Thampi, the owner and CEO of several health care facilities in Northern California, found it difficult to strike a balance between his business and his acting career. So he put a hold on his acting career and returned to the US to concentrate on his businesses. He made a promise to himself that he would return to acting only if he were to find an exceptional role in an exceptional film. Thampi¢s next film Jana Nayakan (1998) . But again, Thampi declined other offers and waited for a compelling script. In his free time, he wrote and starred in a comedy play Idichakka Plamood Police Station (1999) which was well received and ran to packed houses in different cities in the U.S. leter he wrote two more comedy dramas called Dr. Diva sahayam and Ente Marykuttyai Ithaamerikaya.
