The Kerala State film awards for the year 2007 announced!!!

Best Actor: Mohanlal for his role in Paradesi

. Mohanlal won the award for his superb portrayal of Valiyadathu Moosa, an 80-year old Malayali who waged a long battle with the Indian authorities for the right to live in his own native place.

Not once did Mohanlal falter in his body language as he shuttled between a 35-year old to an 80-year old.

Director K T Kujnimohammed summed it best when he said, "I chose Mohanlal because he is Mohanlal. In this film, he is 35-years old, 40-years old, 50-years old and in most of the film, he is 80! Who else can portray such range?"

Actor Mohanlal's entry into magic has triggered off a controversy in Kerala. Two leading magicians in the state are now at loggerheads over concerns relating to the star's safety in a dangerous stunt he is scheduled to perform on Sunday.

One of Kerala's most popular magicians Samrat has protested the actor Mohanlal's foray into the world of magic.

Under the expert guidance of another well-known magician, Muthukad, the star of Malayalam cinema is all set to perform a death-defying escape act called Burning Illusion in Thiruvananthapuram this Sunday.

But 300 magicians led by Samrat are against the show.

“It’s not right to use somebody like Mohanlal to do such a dangerous act. Doing this act is no child's play. It requires years of practice. Someone else instead of Mohanlal should have been used,” Samrat said.

Mohanlal has not responded to the protests, but sources close to the actor say that he has been practicing the act for almost two years now.

Muthukad, who has trained Lal and has himself performed the trick successfully many times, says the star's safety is his responsibility.

“All escape acts have got risk if you don not practice it well. He has practised so well, then what’s the problem? I am also a big fan of Mohanlal and its my responsibility to do all the things in a proper way. We are confident,” said Muthukad.

Controversy aside, all eyes are now on Mohanlal who will perform the stunt on April 27, as thousands of his fans look on, hoping that their favourite actor comes out safe.

Actor Mohanlal gives up his shot at magic

Wednesday, 23 April , 2008, 22:38

Thiruvananthapuram: Under pressure from his fans and well wishers, popular Malayalam film star Mohanlal on Wednesday called off his plan to perform the dangerous 'fire escape' act as part of a magic show planned to be held here on April 27.

According to magician Gopinath Muthukad, under whose tutelage the actor planned to perform the magic event 'burning illusion', Mohanlal has decided to give up the plan due to pressure from various quarters.

"He was very unhappy to give up his shot at the magic as he had spent valuable time in perfecting the art scheduled to be performed before the public at the Chandrasekharan Nair stadium here," Muthukad told PTI.

"What the country lost is a magic performance by a great artiste like Mohanlal as he was very much confident of performing the fire escape act without endangering himself", Muthukad said.

Mohanlal's Fans Association and Malayalam Cine Artists' Association as well as persons from different walks of life had requested the actor not to go ahead with his plan.

The actor's plan kicked up a row after a group of magicians came out against the super star performing the 'burning illusion' holding it was a high risk number which could even pose a danger to his life.

The special item, to be performed as a prelude to the international magic convention ‘Vismayam 2008' beginning here on May 1, will have the actor handcuffed and wrapped in chains with the keys in the hands of dignitaries watching the show. The actor will then be put inside a box, which will be thrown into a ball of fire from where he has to escape.

Kochi, Aug 20 (PTI) Malayalam actor Mohanlal today said one of the best moments of his life was having acted along with the late Bharat Gopi in the film 'Aakashagopuram', which will be released on August 22.

Speaking to reporters after a preview of the film, Mohanlal, who plays the hero, said he considered it an honour to have acted along with Bharat Gopi, "one of the greatest Malayalam actors." "Aakashagopuram' is an adaptation of the Henrik Ibsen classic 'Master Builder'. The entire film was shot in England.

The film Director K P Kumaran said that the intriguing psychological insights into human nature, as well as the experiences of the characters in situations of conflict in Ibsen's play was what attracted him to it. "It lifts the play from the level of the mundane," he said.

Kumaran said Malayalam literature and Malayalis have a special relation with Isben.

The pioneers of Malayalam prose drama such as N Krishna Pillai, who revolutionised the stage with his plays 'Bhagna Bhavanam' and 'Kanyaka' (Young Girl) were inspired by Isben, he said.

"Adapting 'Master Builder' is the greatest tribute I can pay to the playwright, whose dramas have always inspired me," he said.

The films tells the story of Albert Samson (Mohanlal), a middle-aged architect who slowly makes his way up in his profession and becomes one of the most sought after persons.

The film producer Manu S Kumaran said about Rs 10 crore had been spent on making the film.

The film also stars Sreenivasan, Swetha Menon, Manoj K Jayan, Geethu Mohandas and newcomer Nithya.

‘Bhagavan’ was shot in 12 hours

Mohanlal starrer ‘Bhagawan’, directed by newcomer Prashanth Mambully, has been canned in 12 hours! The shoot began at 7 am on December 8 and the pack-up call came at 7 p.m. The film is slated to hit screens on January 23.

It’s the first time that a Malayalam movie of this magnitude has been shot in half a day’s time. Of course, Jayaraj’s ‘Atbhutham’ was shot in just 2 hours and 14 minutes, but it was an offbeat attempt and the whole action was limited to just two rooms. ‘Bhagavan’ is an out-and-out commercial venture, made with a bigger budget and a stellar cast. Mohanlal reportedly appears in 52 of the 57 scenes.

Produced by Vijeesh Mani, the film stars Daniel Balaji, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, Sivaji Guruvayoor, Sreejith Ravi, Ibrahim Kutty and Sreelatha. Mohanlal plays a gynaecologist, Dr.Balagopal, who is face-to-face with death when his hospital gets besieged by terrorists.

‘Bhagawan’ has some high-voltage action sequences. The shoot was completed using four camera units (simultaneously), headed by acclaimed cinematographer Loganathan.
