"Foreign students will be the most attracted"

Kerala school to train in coconut plucking

In order to overcome the acute shortage of tree climbers and farmhands in the state, the Kerala Government is planning to set up a school that would provide training in coconut-plucking and tree climbing.

"The Government is consulting the experts to set up such an institute and any final decision will be taken after thorough discussions," said Director of Agriculture, Mr. K.K. Gangadharan.

It is a matter of concern for the state government that a large number of people migrate from far-off states like Bihar and West Bengal to take up this profession.

"Creation of a pool of labourers is extremely important to sustain farming in Kerala. This could be achieved by giving them structured training in farm work and allied activities", Gangadharan added.

The official statistics show that about 16 crore coconut trees of the state are spread over housing plots. Most villages have only one or two coconut palm climbers. This creates a problem for farmers to harvest them at the right time.

The Government is also formulating a mechanism to produce skilled manpower in both coconut farming and paddy cultivation. They would be imparted with the requisite skills for using machines in farming activities.

Powered by sheer self-confidence, a woman has embarked upon the unusual task of plucking coconuts from the trees, a task, so far a male bastion.

Sharmila, 37, can swiftly pluck nuts by climbing steep coconut trees of any height, providing much needed relief to people, as the youth are increasingly distancing themselves from the traditional job.

Kerala, the land of keras - coconuts, is facing an acute shortage of skilled labourers to pluck the nuts.

A resident of Pallikkara panchayat in Kasaragod district, Sharmila works as a part-time government servant and utilises her spare time to pluck coconuts, using a manually operated gadget. She climbs up around 10 to 15 coconut trees a day, charging Rs 10 per a tree.

“When I took up the job, my neighbours and people nearby stared at me in disbelief and awe, wondering whether a woman should take up the highly risky job. But today I am a sought after person as I promptly oblige calls to pluck coconuts,” says Sharmila.

“My decision to take up the rare but unfamiliar job for a woman came after my husband’s desperate plea to some casual workers to pluck coconuts from our newly purchased land on the eve of our house warming ceremony went unheard,” she says.

The first opportunity to try the machine came after Sharmila managed to slowly climb smaller coconut trees, using the gadget bought by her father five months back.

Sharmila’s daughter Dincy is now trying her hands on the machine and her only complaint is that her friends refuse to acknowledge her newly acquired skills.

As he approaches his first tree of the day, S. Mohan presses his calloused palms together and bows his head. “Oh God, I am climbing the coconut tree,” he whispers. “Protect me from harm.”

With no safety gear beyond a strap of palm frond tied around his ankles, he launches himself onto the tree’s arcing trunk, which rises dozens of feet into the air. With a swift series of spider-like maneuvers, he is at the top of the tree within seconds, slicing the nuts from their stems with a heavy blade he carries tucked into his loincloth.

One misstep and he would surely fall, as much as 100 feet to the ground.
