Statesman News Service “It is not an IT-finishing school and Mrs Tina Parsons (An American who has been hired by AABC as Executive Director of Training) is not an English language teacher. AABC is a professional training academy with mock boardrooms, latest voice-recognition software, and custom-made training packages for students already employed and therefore finding it difficult to attend regular classes. The idea is not to have Malayalees pretend to speak like Americans but maintaining cultural identity while improving speech intelligibility,” said Mr Tharoor, a self-confessed “state chauvinist”. Mrs Parsons, a speech language pathologist and voice specialist, will oversee the course. Topics of the module include language and grammar, with emphasis on business and academic vocabulary, public speaking and presentation skills and business etiquette. She said that the academy located at Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram, has employed 12 teachers, all PhDs in English. “Intake will be via a written exam. There will be less than 20 students in six classrooms, the course would commence by early June,” she said. Mr Tharoor, who has kept himself busy with pro bono service for educational institutions and humanitarian agencies in India and abroad, said he realised that such an institution was the need of the hour after speaking with CEOs of companies based in Technopark who complained that their foreign clients had difficulty understanding their Indian counterparts. However, Mr Tharoor, wont be teaching any modules, “because I am at best an amateur”, and will act more like a brand ambassador for AABC as he retains his NRI status. But students willing to shell Rs 30,000 for the two-month programme can walk away with a certificate, which as Mr Tharoor puts it, “will be a ticket to successful employment.” |
