Reality shows hit TV serials, many out of work

With reality shows becoming increasingly popular, a majority of the 5,000-odd independent artistes and technicians involved in the production of Malayalam television serials and family soaps have gone out of work.

"Most of the 5,000-odd workers, including actors, dubbing artistes, visual editors, sound technicians, cameramen and camera assistants are either out of work or have very less work. For the past six months or so, the industry is in a crisis," Vijaya Krishnan, President, Confederation of TV Artists, Commercial Operators and Technicians (CONTACT) in Kerala, said.

Around 100 independent editing studios across the state have also been affected by the crisis. "Only 20 per cent of these studios have some work," he told PTI.

Visual editors, who used to earn Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 monthly, are now hardly getting Rs 5,000. The situation is similar in the case of other technicians also. Vasundhara Devi, a Thiruvananthapuram-based dubbing artiste, said over 100 artistes, who had been lending their voice for TV serial characters, were facing an acute financial crisis.

"From a handsome Rs 25,000 to Rs 35,000 earned monthly, many even find it difficult to get Rs 5,000," she said. According to R Gopinath, who has directed 15 serials, many directors have left the industry and were trying their luck in other fields.

"Earlier, at least 36 TV serials were aired through six or seven prominent channels and now the number has come down to about a dozen. Moreover, the prime time slots have been taken away by the reality shows", he said.

Very poor situation.... Can reality shows make this much trouble to the serial industry?... It is seen in the TAM ratings of the serials... Many serials who were occupying the top positions in the TAM ratings have come down in their rating after the beginning of the reality show era in the channels.

So it is natural that the technicians and other associated artists in the serial industry get affected due to the reality shows... Some people say the shows brought an end to the tear serials of Malayalam...But it is the livelihood of thousands of people...Ermm

Most of the serials start with strong advertisements and end within a month or two due to poor ratings. But does the reality shows only is making this problem?Disapprove I think the quality of the serials also has come down.. People will get bored seeing the same theme serials every day...also when the serials get a good rating after some time, the story starts stretching, making the serial never ending....

Because of the Idea Star Singer show on Asianet, the ratings of the Soorya TV serials have come down tremendously...It's 9 pm serial "Minnukettu" was reigning supremacy for a long time...It is running in its 700th episodes now, i think...But after the beginning of Idea Star Singer at 8.30 pm on Asianet, this serial has come down, but still going on with lot of problems (Never ending problems, i should say)...

Inaugurating the 79th anniversary of Kerala Kalamandalam at Cherurthurthy on Monday, Cultural Affairs Minister M A Baby said: “The pressure imposed on children and the youth in reality shows of various channels is a serious matter. Going after flats will render the future of the young generation ‘flat’”.

He urged students to learn from the lives of renowned maestros who dedicated themselves to art and culture.

“Learn it from gurus with determination and dedication and fame will follow in due course.’ Kathakali maestro Padmasree Kalamandalam Gopi and Kalamandalam Narayanan Nambeesan are living role models who achieved fame through their dedication, Baby said.

The minister later laid the foundation stone for the new library and research centre of Kalamandalam.
