This temple is located near Ernakulam, about 8 km from Tripunithura. The 'Prathishta' is Bhagavathy (Rajarajeswari) who is worshipped in three different forms - as Saraswathi in the morning (draped in white), Bhadrakali in the afternoon (draped in crimson Red) and as Durga in the evening (draped in Blue).

Adjacent to the Devi Idol is an idol of Lord Vishnu in a sanctum. Vishnu and Bhagawati together are referred to as Lakshminarayana. So the prayers here address the deity as Amme Narayana, Devi Narayana and Lakshmi Narayana. "MAKOM Thozhal" is the most important festival of the temple which is celebrated in the month of Kumbham (Feb / March).

hi Harry Menon,

Not just for Pravasi malayalee, every malayalee must vist these special temples at least once ina life time.

As a matter of fact, I wanted to go to thailand for a tour with my wife. It was costing me a little bit extra and started to think in lines of going for a international tour loan.

What crazy idea it had been, only after I started exploring some places in kerala on internet, we decied not to do a international touring until we have see enough of Kearala LOL

Loan and affordability was ofcourse the prime reason. But it kicked off a thought in me and asked myself "have I seen the MUST VISITs of my own homeland?" the answe is a BIG NO.

So now am studying various places of Kerala and planning of touring every year to each destinations in Kerala.

A subsite on my personal site will carry all the pictures and details of every place I visit. I started making some pages already at www.agnisharman.com/kerala like the Hindu temples in Kerala http://www.agnisharman.com/kerala/temples.htm

Do let me know your experience about "Have you seen the Must visits of my homeland".
We can start it as a seperate discussion.
I am sure our friends will love it and people planning to visit Kerala will benefit it

Dear Agnisharman,

Thank you for your comments about interesting places we should visit in our home land as Malayalees.

In year 2005, I took a group of 32 Malayalees (1st, 2nd and 3rd generation) to Kerala at the invitaiton of NORKA roots under ALL MALAYASIA MALAYALEE ASSOCIATION (AMMA) banner when I was the General Secretary.

Right from the NEDUMBASERI airport we were greeted warmly by the NORKA root officials and we all had a wonderful, splendid and pleasant time in places like COCHIN, MUNNAR, ALAPUZHA, KOTTAYAM, AND TRIVANDRUM.  We were even taken to the Kerala State Assembly when the assembly was in session and the Speaker SRI RAMAKRISHNAN stopped the assembly proceedings to announce the arrival of the MALAYSIAN delegation.

Most members of our group who were first timers to KERALA enjoyed places like COCHIN, where we had the opportunity to see old palaces, mosques, and the chinese fishing net etc.

The sun set at KANYA KUMARI was a sight to behold and were interviewed by the local news papers and ASIA NET the TV Channel.

I am trying to bring another group of MALAYALEES (30 IN THE GROUP) to KERALA under another MALAYALEE ASSOCIATION (STATE) SELANGOR/FEDERAL TERRITORY MALAYALEE ASSOCIATION some time in February/March, 2007.

Your website giving details of places we should visit is actually useful and we should become members to log into the website to know more about our motherland.

Thank you for your enlightning website.  I would also appreciate, if some one can let me know how to get the lyrics of old Jesudas songs in the 80's and 90's.

Regards

Chottanikkara temple, located near Ernakulam enshrines Bhagawati - the mother Goddess, one of the most popular deities in Kerala.

People who have mental illness seek refuge in the divine mother, who graciously cures all her devotees. Goddess Rajarajeswari is the presiding deity.

This deity is worshipped in three different forms - as Saraswati in the morning - draped in white, as Bhadrakali at noon draped in crimson, and as Durga in the evening decked in blue.

"MAKOM Thozhal" (worship on the Makom day) is the most important festival of the temple which is celebrated in the month of Kumbham. (Feb / March) It is believed that Bhagavathy in her full attire gave darsan to Vilwamangalam Swamiyar on the Makom day and appears on the same day every year for giving darsan to the devotees in her special appearance.

NAMASTHE MAHADEVI HE VARNAROOPE NAMASTHE GIRAMDEVI GHEERVANA VANDYE NAMASTHE MAHAPADMA KANTHARAVASE SAMASTHANJA VIDYAM PRADEHI PRADEHI

Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple is the most important temple among the 393 shrines spread over 3 Districts of Kerala and coming under the administration of Cochin Devaswom Board. The divine mother known as Rajarajeswari (Adiparasakthi) is worshipped here in three forms; Saraswathy in the morning, Lakshmi at noon and Durga in the evening. There is an idol of Mahavishnu on the same pedestal and so the deity is called Ammenarayana, Devinarayana, Lakshminarayana and Bhadrenarayana also. Along with Lakshmi & Narayana there are idols of Brahma, Siva, Ganapathi, Subramanya and Sastha on the same pedestal.

Apart from the main deity, the temple complex consists of Kizhukkavu Bhagavathy temple, temples for Sastha, Siva, Ganapathi, Nagas and other Upa-Devas. The pleasant atmosphere in the temple gives mental peace and harmony to devotees.

"MAKOM Thozhal" (worship on the Makom day) is the most important festival of the temple which is celebrated in the month of Kumbham. (Feb / March). It is believed that Bhagavathy in her full attire gave darsan to Vilwamangalam Swamiyar on the Makom day and appears on the same day every year for giving darsan to the devotees in her special appearance. The temple of Chottanikkara is a living legend embellished in magnificent mythology and awe-inspiring truth. Its historical appeal and traditional influence on generations of people is tremendous. Legends say that the presence of divinity here was worshipped by Bhogacharya. It is the cynosure of thousands of devotees swarming from all over the world on all auspicious and festive occasions. The golden hued idol bedecked with flowers, garlands, jewels and bathed in myrid of light shine splendidly.

The temple is situated in hilly region surrounded on all sides by undulating beauty, rich with its green turf, golden farms and provides deep spiritual solace to the entire devotees. This is one of the most celebrated hindu shrines of Kerala. Thousands of pilgrims and devotees of the Goddess visit here and make their reverential offerings to redeem them of their afflictions. A visit to the temple brings relief to them from the overburdening anguish and agonies of material life.

The sacred doors of the sanctum sanctorum open in the wee hours of the day, at 4.00 a.m. The blowing of the conch and playing of the temple musical instruments lend an enchanting ritualistic rhythm and peace to those who seek a sure answer to the patient prayers. Sree Mookambika Saraswathy is also believed as present in the temple in the morning. That is why Mookambika Temple at kollur opens only after the Goddess Saraswathy returns to there late in the morning.

On the eastern side of the temple pond stands the Kizhukkavu temple. The idol facing westward is believed to be installed by Vilwamangalam Swamiyaar. After the Athazha pooja (main pooja in the evening), the chief priest of the principal deity comes to Kizhukkavu to perform the famous and great pooja "ValiyaGuruthy" (great Sacrifice). The guruthy is prepared in 12 cauldrons (huge vessel) and is performed at about 8.45 p.m every night. Those who witness the guruthy performance, which itself is awe inspiring and prolonged ceremony, finds it an experience which is indescribable.
